These air fryer mushrooms make a super quick, easy and healthy side dish that's absolutely irresistible. Juicy garlic mushrooms are air-fried to perfection, then mixed with lemon, oil and finely grated parmesan cheese for a flavour explosion!
I've always loved a pan-fried mushroom like these sautéed green beans and mushrooms but after trying air-fried mushrooms a few weeks ago I won't cook them any other way!
Cooking mushrooms in the air fryer is effortless. All you have to do is throw them in and shake the basket every few minutes until they are tender and juicy.
Serve these mushrooms alongside a delicious steak, some chicken or nestled in a tofu buddha bowl. Or just eat them straight out of the bowl - I won't judge!!
You can also make these mushrooms vegan, dairy free and whole30 friendly by leaving off the parmesan cheese. They still taste AMAZING!
CAN I AIR-FRY MUSHROOMS?
Absolutely! The air fryer is a valuable appliance that has rightfully earned its place on the kitchen countertop. I'm constantly surprised by its capabilities and the amount of recipes I completely transitioned there.
Air frying mushrooms is the easiest way to prepare them without the hassle of traditional frying, as result is a delicious recipe full of flavour. You'd want to eat a whole batch by yourself!
WHAT TYPES OF MUSHROOMS ARE BEST TO AIR-FRY?
You can use any type of air-fried mushrooms you want. As long as you opt for the best mushrooms (we always root freshness over anything), you'll enjoy a delicious meal. Fresh mushrooms maintain texture without becoming slimy.
I like to use shiitake mushrooms and portabella mushrooms (also known as portobello mushrooms) picked when they're younger for deeper flavour.
But you can also go for white button mushrooms, cremini mushrooms (also known as baby Bella mushrooms), or oyster mushrooms for this recipe.

HOW TO PREPARE FRESH MUSHROOMS IN THE AIR FRYER?
Before you air fry, make sure to clean mushrooms first! Using a lightly damp paper towel, wipe any excess dirt, but don't put mushrooms in water since they're absorbent and will become soggy.
Pre-sliced mushrooms won't work well for this recipe. Instead, opt to cut whole mushrooms yourself to ensure they've got wedges that work for air frying. Try to cut them about the same size to achieve crispy edges.
Cut each mushroom into quarters and each quarter in half again. Afterward this will give you 8 pieces per mushroom. Now you're ready to air fry!
HOW LONG TO COOK MUSHROOM IN AIR FRYER
Cooking time may vary depending on the size of your air fryer. For example, a smaller air fryer might require more batches and therefore more time to cook.
Chopped mushrooms have approximately a 10-minute cook time in the air fryer at 180°C/350°F.
I highly recommend keeping a close eye on them to ensure even cooking every time.

HOW TO COOK MUSHROOM IN AIR FRYER
Mushrooms are incredibly easy to make in the air fryer. Here's all you need to do...
- Mix: Mix mushrooms, olive oil, garlic powder, salt and pepper together in a bowl.
- Cook: Add mushrooms to the air fryer basket and cook at 180°C/350°F for 10 minutes or until tender. Finally, Shake the air fryer basket every few minutes to cook evenly.
- Flavour: Mix cooked mushrooms with fresh lemon juice, EVOO and sprinkle over some parmesan cheese. Serve immediately. Bon appetite!
TIPS FOR THE PERFECT AIR FRYER MUSHROOMS RECIPE
- Larger mushrooms need more oil. If you're using large portobello mushrooms you may need to add a little more oil to the mixing bowl before you cook them. You'll be able to judge this easily as everything should mix well. However if not, throw in a little more oil.
- Opt for good-quality oil. I like to use regular olive oil and extra virgin olive oil for topping finished dishes (like salads). As a result, this recipe uses both BUT if you only have regular olive oil, it's fine to use just that. However, you can opt for avocado oil or grapeseed oil. As a general rule of thumb, opt for oils with a high smoke point and avoid non-stick sprays that will damage your air fryer.
- Don't overcrowd air fryers. Try placing your baby Bellas in a single layer in your air fryer for perfect mushrooms every time. Leave enough room between fried mushrooms so that hot air can circulate and cook them evenly.
- Adjust to different diets. Leave parmesan cheese off to turn this recipe vegan, dairy-free, whole30, and paleo-friendly.
- Every air fryer works differently. Keep an eye on your mushrooms as they are cooking and give the basket a good shake every few minutes to ensure even cooking.
HOW TO SERVE MUSHROOMS AS A MAIN DISH
For the best mushrooms recipe, always opt for quality seasoning. Especially my go-to seasoning includes garlic powder, oil, salt and pepper (or black pepper), and sometimes thyme.
Fresh thyme can add aromatics and a woodsy flavour that'll please your palate in every bite. Another option is adding a teaspoon of soy sauce or gluten-free Worcestershire sauce for that extra salty flavour. Some recipes also suggest tossing the mushrooms in melted butter for a richer flavour.
Once ready, mix them with juice from lemon wedges, and optionally sprinkle some parmesan cheese. Dressings are also a favourite. However i usually go with a blue cheese dressing or buttermilk ranch.
HOW TO SERVE MUSHROOMS AS A SIDE DISH
Here are a few ideas for serving mushrooms as a side dish:
- Meat is this recipe's BFF. Especially grilled meats like pork, chicken, and steak.
- Add them to salads for delicious dinner recipes. They'll go wonderfully with this roasted sweet potato and feta salad.
- Vegan tacos with mushrooms for the win! Have you tried them? They're seriously an addiction among vegan recipes, and you won't even miss the meat.
- Pasta and mushrooms. What a combo! I specifically like to enjoy them in my vegetable stir-fry with noodles.
- Another hit is mushroom nachos. Add them to a bed of cheesy vegetarian sweet potato nachos, and you'll become obsessed.
- Finally, enjoy them in sandwiches or burgers, such as this grilled chicken burger recipe.
HOW TO STORE AND REHEAT AIR FRYER MUSHROOMS
- Leftovers: Once cooked, let air-fried mushrooms cool down to room temperature (this step will prevent them from getting soggy). Then, add them to an airtight container and store them in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
- Reheating: When you're ready to reheat them, place them in the air fryer at 180°C/350°F for 5 minutes, as this will help restore some of their crispiness. Serve immediately and avoid reheating for a second time.
