I have spent the majority of my life having to battle with acne and I’m so well and truly over it! I’m now on a mission to turn it around!
I have had problems with my skin since I started high school. That’s 16 years ago. It’s not just the occasional pimple we are talking about here either. My skin has been consistently, for lack of a better word, sh*t for that entire 16-year period. When I was younger I used to tell myself that when I reached adulthood, the regular breakouts would be a thing of the past. But at the ripe old age of 28 they don’t seem to be going anywhere.
I have tried literally every remedy under the sun. Every cleanser. Every routine. Every spot fix. Every topical cream. I’ve tried toothpaste as a spot treatment (hello old wives tales!) and apple cider vinegar over my face at night (that only left me super stinky). I even did a stint on antibiotics (did nothing) and roaccutane which cleared my skin but worsened my anxiety and depression. And through all of these things I have not yet found a single thing that improves my skin for good. Some make it slightly better, some slightly worse. But not one of them has made a significant difference.
And I have had enough!
Most days I’m able to solider on. I even venture out of the house without make-up on regularly these days (my teenage self would shudder at the thought). But on days like today, when I have a giant red pimple on the middle of my forehead, and clusters of little pimples along my chin, I just want to hide away from the world and stay in bed. Ridiculous overreaction? Perhaps. But unless you’ve struggled with the beast that is acne you can’t judge!
My frustration at my breakouts at the moment stems from the fact that a) I’m post-menstrual by about a week, b) I’ve reduced sugar significantly in my diet and have been eating plenty of whole foods and c) I have been keeping to a regular natural product routine.
I really am at a loss at the moment as to what is causing the endless breakouts so I thought I’d try a few different things.
Over the next few months I’m going to try:
- Removing dairy – I spoke about this in my challenge this week but I’m ditching dairy from my diet altogether for a month (bye bye ice-cream 🙁 ). I have read that gut issues caused by cow’s milk can affect your skin so I’m giving this a shot!
- A new skincare regime – The products I’ve been using lately don’t seem to be cutting it. What I really want to do is strip back my routine to make sure I’m not over-washing my face. Open to any natural skincare product suggestions if you have any that work for you too!
- Quitting sugar – I have just finished reading Sweet Poison by David Gillespie and am even more convinced that fructose needs to go! I would say my diet at the moment is 80% without fructose but I need to try and work on that other 20% – sure a treat on occasion won’t hurt but I can’t break every weekend and wonder why my skin is playing up. Luckily most of my favourite sugary treats have dairy in them (ice-cream, chocolate) so I can tackle these two hand in hand.
I’ll let you know the results of my trials and how each worked for me. I am really interested to see what happens with quitting dairy. I have read a lot of people’s feedback that they have noticed a significant difference and whilst it would devastate me because I love all things dairy, if I can clear my skin the payoff may be worth it!
